PRN Medication (Pro Re Nata)
Definition: "Pro re nata" — Latin for "as the circumstance arises." Medication taken only when needed, not on a fixed schedule, usually with a minimum interval between doses.
Examples
- Pain reliever for occasional headache — max every 4 hours, no more than 6 doses per day.
- Anti-anxiety medication for panic attacks — as needed, cooldown 8 hours.
Why It Matters
PRN medications are inherently harder to track than scheduled ones. Without a cooldown timer, patients risk taking doses too close together. Without a daily maximum, overuse is invisible. A good PRN reminder system tracks: last dose timestamp, minimum cooldown, daily limit, and pattern detection (increasing frequency may indicate worsening condition).
